Early 20th Century – Kazak Handwoven Wool Rug

10’ x 7’

Handknotted rug has a red field with three medallions and many stepped hooked polygons. There is green inner guard with an intertwining vine motif and this design is repeated along the dark blue outer guard. The yellow main stripe with repeating blue, red, and pink design depicting a winding river with houses surrounds the rug, with a very short fringe along two sides.

Kazak rugs have their roots in the Caucasus region, an area that spans modern-day Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.  This is most likely a Sewan Kazak rug, also known as Shield Kazaks, which originate from the Sewan region in the north-eastern part of the Caucasus. These rugs are known for their distinct geometric patterns and the use of a cruciform central medallion. Sewan Kazak rugs often exhibit a limited colour palette, predominantly using shades of red, blue, and yellow. The designs are characterised by the use of large, bold motifs, including geometric patterns, stylised animals, and floral elements, as well as the extensive use of latch-hook designs in the borders.
